# Americans Stand Ready

September is National Preparedness Month. This year’s Ready.gov theme is simple: Americans Stand Ready.

That does not mean waiting for a headline disaster. It means the ordinary work is already done when the lights go out. Know what actually fails where you live. Have a plan the household can follow. Keep food, water, heat, medicine, and power in working order. Be able to help a neighbor without emptying your own margin.

Ready.gov frames it in three parts: take care of your own household so first responders are not your first plan, protect family and friends, and strengthen the community around you. The useful test is not a scenario that has never happened. It is the winter storm, the multi-day outage, the closed road — the event that returns every year.

The community edition of DPO Ready Center includes the core Ready.gov-aligned checklists. Run them on your own machine, offline. You will see what you have, what you still need, and what is overdue. That is the small step the month is for.
