The Colt Single Action Army is simple by design — and that is exactly why cleaning it well matters. Powder residue, lead, copper, and moisture collect in a few predictable places: the bore, the chambers, the front of the cylinder, and the base-pin tunnel. Left alone, that fouling hardens, accuracy falls off, and the cylinder starts to feel gritty when you turn it.

This guide is for a modern 3rd Generation SAA-style Colt (transfer-bar safety, production guns). It covers routine cleaning after range use or before storage — not a full lockwork teardown. For pin details or model-specific warnings, your owner’s manual still wins.

Not every session needs the same level of work. After a light range day of about 50 rounds with non-corrosive ammo, you can shorten the job. After heavy use, humidity, or before long storage, use the full procedure. Both are described below.


Before you start: safety

Treat every firearm as loaded until you have personally verified otherwise.

  1. Point the muzzle in a safe direction.
  2. Keep your finger off the trigger.
  3. Open the loading gate.
  4. Place the hammer on half-cock (or the position your manual specifies so the cylinder can turn freely).
  5. Rotate the cylinder and inspect every chamber. No live rounds, no empty cases left behind.
  6. Confirm the barrel is clear.

Only then begin cleaning.

Why this order matters: A Single Action Army does not have a modern magazine disconnect or striker indicator. The loading gate and half-cock are part of how you see the chambers. Skipping the visual check is how negligent discharges happen during “cleaning.”


Tools and supplies

You do not need a workbench full of specialty gear.

  • Cleaning rod with jag (and a brush that fits your caliber)
  • Cotton patches
  • Bronze bore brush
  • Nylon or soft toothbrush
  • Quality bore solvent
  • Gun oil (and optionally a light grease for the base pin)
  • Clean lint-free cloths
  • Soft mat so small parts do not bounce onto the floor

Why bronze, not steel, for the bore: Steel brushes can scratch the rifling over time. Bronze is hard enough to move copper and lead and soft enough to spare the steel.


Light range day (~50 rounds): what to do — and what you can scale back

Not every session needs a full strip-and-soak. After a normal range day with a modest round count and non-corrosive ammo, fouling is usually light. You still must verify the gun is unloaded and still should protect the bore and cylinder face — but you can skip the heavy work.

Always do (even after 50 rounds)

  1. Safety check — loading gate open, every chamber empty, bore clear.
  2. Wipe the exterior — fingerprints and powder film cause rust.
  3. Quick bore pass — 1–2 solvent patches, then dry patches until they look clean. A bronze brush is optional if patches come out clean quickly.
  4. Cylinder face and gap area — wipe the front of the cylinder and the forcing-cone region; this is where short sessions still leave residue.
  5. Chambers — a quick solvent patch or brush in each chamber if you see residue; dry them.
  6. Light oil — thin film on the base pin if you removed it, or at least a wipe on accessible pin surfaces; exterior wipe-down.
  7. Function check — cylinder turns freely, gate closes, nothing gritty.

Do not skip just because the round count was low

  • Confirming unloaded
  • Bore at least patched (moisture and residue still sit in the rifling)
  • Cylinder face wipe (blast residue does not care that you only fired 50)
  • Rust prevention wipe before it goes back in the safe

Rule of thumb

  • ~50 rounds, clean non-corrosive ammo, dry day, gun still feels smooth → short clean: patches, chamber wipe, cylinder face, exterior, light oil as needed.
  • Hundreds of rounds, leading, visible crust, gritty rotation, rain/humidity, or long storage ahead → full procedure below. It only takes a few extra minutes on an SAA.

Why this split matters: Over-cleaning with excess oil after every short session can leave sludge in the action. Under-cleaning after “only fifty” still leaves residue and moisture in the bore if you live in humidity. Match the clean to the fouling you actually produced — and when in doubt, do the full cylinder-out clean.


Full clean: remove the cylinder

When you need the complete job, the SAA field-strips to a barrelled frame and a free cylinder. That is enough for almost all routine cleaning.

  1. Open the loading gate if it is not already open.
  2. Depress the base-pin latch (the cross-bolt or spring latch under the barrel, just ahead of the cylinder).
  3. Pull the base pin straight forward, out of the frame.
  4. Roll the cylinder out to the right and lift it free.

Why the cylinder comes out: Chambers foul from the rear, and the front face of the cylinder takes hot gas and powder. You cannot clean either properly with the cylinder still in the window. Removing it also lets you wipe the frame’s cylinder recess and the base-pin tunnel — two places that quietly collect grit and cause sticky rotation later.

If the pin or cylinder binds, stop. Do not pry. Recheck that the latch is fully depressed and the pin is aligned.


Full clean: the barrel

Work from the muzzle with care for the crown (the edge of the muzzle). A damaged crown hurts accuracy more than a little extra fouling.

  1. Wet a patch with solvent and pass it through the bore.
  2. Let solvent sit a minute on heavy fouling.
  3. Run a bronze brush through for several passes if the gun was dirty.
  4. Alternate solvent patches and dry patches until patches come out clean.
  5. Finish with dry patches so the bore is not left soaking wet.

Why solvent first, then brush: Softening residue reduces the work the brush has to do and limits unnecessary wear.
Why dry at the end: Oil and solvent left in the bore can attract grit or create first-shot surprises. A nearly dry bore with a hint of protection is better than a wet one for storage.


Full clean: the cylinder

Treat each chamber like a short barrel.

  1. Solvent in each chamber.
  2. Brush each chamber.
  3. Patches until clean and dry.
  4. Clean the front face of the cylinder thoroughly — this surface sees blast and builds a ring of fouling that can slow the cylinder over time.
  5. Wipe the rear / ratchet area lightly. Avoid flooding solvent into the hand and ratchet; dirt belongs out, excess liquid does not belong deep in the mechanism.

Why the front face matters: On a revolver, gas and powder escape at the barrel–cylinder gap. That residue stacks on the cylinder face and forcing-cone area. Ignoring it is a common reason an SAA starts to feel “notchy” even when the bore looks fine.


Full clean: frame and base pin

With the cylinder out you can reach what usually gets skipped.

  • Wipe the cylinder window (top strap, recoil shield area, bottom of the window).
  • Clean the forcing-cone region at the rear of the barrel.
  • Run a thin cloth or swab through the base-pin hole.
  • Wipe the base pin itself until bright and free of grit.
  • Light wipe around the hammer and firing-pin area — do not soak the lockwork.

Why the base-pin tunnel deserves attention: The pin is the axle the cylinder rides on. Grit there feels like a rough action and accelerates wear. A clean pin and tunnel are as important as a clean bore for a gun that will be carried or shot often.


Lubricate lightly

Single actions fail more often from too much oil than from too little. Oil holds powder residue and turns into sludge.

  • Bore: Optional very light oil patch, then a dry or nearly dry patch for storage.
  • Base pin: Thin film of oil or a dab of light gun grease — this is a friction surface.
  • Cylinder pivot / front face contact areas: Minimal film.
  • Exterior: Wipe fingerprints; a thin protective film on metal surfaces prevents rust in humid storage.
  • Lockwork: Do not hose it. Gen 3 guns use a transfer bar; they are not designed for a swimming-in-oil cleaning style.

Why “less is more”: Excess oil migrates, collects carbon, and can become sticky. A thin film where steel rubs steel is enough.


Reassemble and function-check

  1. Place the cylinder back into the frame from the right.
  2. Align it so the base pin slides home smoothly.
  3. Insert the base pin fully.
  4. Confirm the latch engages — the pin should not pull out by hand.
  5. Close the loading gate.
  6. Check: cylinder rotates freely in the loading position; hammer cocks through its clicks without grinding; nothing binds.

Verify unloaded one more time before you put it away.


Habits that keep an SAA trustworthy

  • Clean the same day after a dirty session, especially in humidity.
  • After a light 50-round day, the short clean is enough if the gun feels smooth — use the full clean when fouling, weather, or storage demands it.
  • Store in a dry place; a safe is not automatically dry — consider desiccant.
  • Do not leave soft case foam pressed against an oily gun for months without inspection (foam can trap moisture).
  • Log the cleaning — date, rounds fired, anything you noticed (sticky cylinder, heavy leading, etc.). That history is useful when accuracy changes or parts need attention.

Why logging helps: “I cleaned it sometime last year” does not tell you whether the gun has 50 rounds or 500 since the last detailed clean. A simple maintenance log turns guesswork into a pattern.


What this guide deliberately skips

  • Full hammer/sear/hand disassembly
  • Changing springs or timing work
  • Any modification to the transfer bar or safety systems

Those are gunsmith jobs unless you are trained for them. Routine cleaning does not require opening the lockwork on a Gen 3 SAA.

A Colt Single Action Army rewards basic care. After a short, clean range day, patch the bore, wipe the chambers and cylinder face, kill fingerprints, and put it away dry.
